To determine the Hirsch index, the following condition must be applied: h-index = the largest integer h for which at least h publications have at least h citations each. To better understand the calculation principle, let's look at a few examples.

The h-index is calculated by ranking the author's scientific publications by the number of citations, from the most cited to the least cited. After that, it is determined from which article the above condition for calculating the Hirsch index ceases to be met: the largest number h for which the author has h articles, each of which has at least h citations.
As can be seen, in both examples of index calculation, starting with articles 5 and 6, the previously described mandatory condition for calculating the index is not met. In the first example, article 5 has only 4 citations, and in the second example, article 6 has only 2 citations. Consequently, other publications with fewer than 4 citations in the first case and 5 in the second case do not affect the increase in this indicator and are not taken into account.
